Viton®, also called FKM, is a specialty rubber known for its resistance to temperatures, chemicals, weathering, oil, solvents, and harsh environments. It also has a low compression set, low gas permeability, and resists breaks, tears, and abrasions. Viton®, a fluoroelastomer, is available in several formulations, which contain different amounts of fluorine for resisting specific types of chemicals.
Arizona Sealing Devices is a distributor of Viton® O-rings in a range of sizes for many applications. We are a trusted supplier for the automotive, aerospace, chemical, food and beverage, and other industries. Learn more about Viton® and its uses.
Viton® O-Ring Variations
There are several types of Viton with different properties for different O-ring applications. In general, higher fluorine content improves Viton’s chemical resistance.
Arizona Sealing Devices provides O-rings made from each of these types of Viton®:
- Standard Viton®: Available in types A, B, and F, these have a 66% to 70% fluorine content. They resist chemical damage from oxygen, mineral oil, fuel, hydraulic fluid, solvents, and more. More fluorine provides better fluid resistance; but, as fluorine content increases, flexibility in low-temperature environments deteriorates.
- Viton® GLT and Viton® GFLT: These use copolymerized fluorinated vinyl ether monomer to maintain chemical resistance while also staying flexible at low temperatures.
- Extreme Viton®: Also called Viton® ETP, this type has extra resistance to chemicals such as:
- Acids
- Aldehydes
- Caustic chemicals
- Hydrocarbons
- Ketones
- Low molecular weight esters
- High-Visibility Viton®: These are neon yellow for high visibility in applications with limited light, such as downhole drilling.
- Metal Detectable Viton®: These O-rings can be found with metal detectors so they can be removed from processed products and goods, in compliance with FDA regulations. Fragments of this type of Viton® as small as 2 mm are metal detectable.
Benefits of Viton® (FKM) O-Rings
Viton® is a highly durable material that can withstand harsh conditions including extreme temperatures, outdoor exposure, chemicals, ozone, fuels, solvents, aromatics, and more, making it a long-lasting material for O-rings in critical applications. It also has a low compression set for high sealing power over time. Viton® O-rings contribute to fewer disruptions to operations for replacing O-rings, or dealing with leaks or equipment damage.
Some benefits of using O-rings made from Viton® include:
- Less frequent repairs and downtime, as the O-rings last longer and withstand wear and tear, chemical degradation, and breakdown from temperature extremes.
- Physical resilience and elasticity thanks to a low compression set.
- Compatibility with many strong chemicals, which means less physical degradation, cracking, tearing, and seal failure over time.
- Longer-lasting performance in high-heat environments that other materials simply can’t withstand. Viton® O-rings are high-temp O-rings that retain their mechanical flexibility in temperatures from -15° F (-26° C) to 400° F (205° C).
- Cost savings due to less frequent replacement and less downtime.
Common Applications of Viton® O-Rings
At Arizona Sealing Devices, we serve multiple markets that rely on high-quality Viton®/FKM O-rings. We can help you select the right type of Viton® material and specific O-rings for every application.
Aerospace Industry
Aerospace O-rings must withstand a large range of temperatures without compromising seal quality. Viton® O-rings are designed for high temperatures and chemical resistance and are used in these applications:
- Engines
- Fuel systems
- Hydraulic systems
Automotive Industry
High-temperature O-rings are lightweight and versatile for preventing the risk of fluid leaks and maintaining efficiency in engine coolant assemblies, fuel injection systems, and power steering assemblies.
Chemical Processing Industry
Chemical-resistant O-rings can withstand exposure to concentrated and highly corrosive fluids ranging from acids to organic solvents and more. Viton® O-rings reduce the risk of leaks, contaminants, and environmental emergencies in pipes, pumps, valves, and processing equipment.
Additional Industries
In many types of machinery that handle fluids, O-rings can provide secure, long-lasting seals to prevent leaks and maintain smooth operations. Our Viton® O-rings are commonly used in these additional industries:
- Food and beverage processing facilities
- Oil and gas operations including drilling, pipelines, and processing
- Medical devices and medical device manufacturing
