How to Choose the Right High-Temperature Gasket

Choosing the right high-temperature gasket starts with understanding a few key performance factors that affect sealing reliability:

  1. Temperature Range. High-temperature gasket materials must withstand sustained heat without losing sealing ability. We offer gasket materials capable of maintaining reliable seal performance in temperatures up to 600°F. Some of the materials we work with include silicone, Viton™, PTFE, and more.
  2. Chemical Compatibility. High temperatures can accelerate chemical breakdown. As such, it’s important to evaluate your process media (fuels, oils, acids, etc.) to ensure you choose a gasket material that can withstand it without premature failure.
  3. Pressure Requirements. Operating pressure determines how much force the gasket must withstand to maintain a reliable seal. Selecting a material rated for the application helps prevent leakage, extrusion, and seal failure, especially at elevated temperatures.
  4. Thermal Cycling & Longevity. Selecting a material designed for thermal cycling helps maintain a reliable seal over time.

Common High-Temperature Gasket Material Options

Different high-temperature applications demand different material strengths. We work with a range of proven materials to match thermal exposure, media compatibility, and service conditions:

  • Kalrez®. Suitable for the most extreme chemical and thermal environments. Kalrez® offers outstanding resistance to aggressive media and continuous service temperatures up to 600°F
  • Viton™. A widely used high-temperature gasket material known for its balance of heat resistance and chemical compatibility. Viton™ typically performs well up to 400°F and resists fuels, oils, and many petroleum-based fluids.
  • Aflas®. Often selected for harsh industrial environments due to its excellent resistance to steam and caustic chemicals. Aflas® typically operates continuously from 25°F up to approximately 400°F, making it a good choice for high-temperature applications.
  • Fluorosilicone. Combines the flexibility of silicone with improved resistance to fuels and solvents. Suitable for applications requiring a broad temperature range, typically from -75°F to 400°F.
  • PTFE. Known for near-universal chemical resistance and thermal stability. PTFE performs reliably in applications up to approximately 500°F.
  • Silicone. Offers excellent flexibility and temperature stability, performing in continuous service up to 500°F, depending on formulation.
