Fuel-Resistant O-Rings

Fuel-Resistant O-Rings

O-rings are integral components in many fuel systems for sealing in fluids and blocking out contaminants. Fuel-resistant O-rings are subject to heavy wear and tear and continual exposure to oil, fuel, and high temperatures, so they must be made from appropriate materials to ensure a lasting seal.

Arizona Sealing Devices provides a range of fuel- and oil-resistant O-rings that are suitable for these critical applications. With decades of sealing experience and ISO 9001:2015 certification, we can provide reliable, high-quality O-rings for the most challenging applications. Learn more about our standard and custom O-rings, material options, and common applications for them.

Standard and Custom Fuel & Oil-Resistant O-Rings

We provide both standard and custom O-rings that are compatible with fuels and oils. Our standard cross-section configurations include:

  • Round. Conventional liquid- and gas-resistant O-rings feature a round cross-section, which is capable of effective sealing in any direction.
  • Square. Square cross-sections create a tight seal regardless of surface features.
  • Quad. An X-shaped cross-section has four lobes, which doubles the O-ring’s sealing surface area for reliable sealing without the need for high compression.

In addition to standard options, we can supply O-rings to your application’s requirements, including food-grade, Mil-Spec-compliant, vulcanized, and metric options. Critical factors for custom O-rings also include compression squeeze, diameter stretch and outer diameter interference, gland fill and type, and extrusion gap.

Why Choose Arizona Sealing to Fulfill Your Oil & Fuel-Resistant O-Ring Needs?

We provide superior quality fuel-resistant O-rings and other sealing solutions that are trusted in aviation, military, and industrial applications. In addition to standard products, we supply custom O-rings and other sealing solutions that meet your requirements and fit your equipment.

We also offer a variety of caps, gaskets, sheeting, plugs, and accessories including clamps and cable ties, as well as kitting services to streamline ordering and operations for our customers. Arizona Sealing is a ISO 9001/2015 and AS9120B certified distributor with over 35 years of industry experience.

Materials Used for Oil and Fuel-Resistant O-Rings

While the shape of the ring is important to forming a tight and resilient seal, it’s also critical to select the right material. Many polymers are susceptible to corrosion or degradation when exposed to fuels and oils; however, the following materials are generally considered durable for these applications. As always, the specific fuel or oil formulation will determine the best material to use.

  • Buna-N (Nitrile). This material provides reliable resistance against petroleum-based fuels and oils. It is less resistant to ozone, UV radiation, ketones, brake fluid, and high temperatures.
  • Fluorocarbon (Viton). Fluorocarbon, or Viton, is resistant to gasoline, diesel, and ethanol fuels, as well as oils, solvents, and high temperatures. It does not perform as well in cold temperatures or when exposed to ketones or esters.
  • Polyurethane. Also referred to as PU, this material is a good choice with gasoline, diesel, kerosene, and oils; however, it is less well-suited for ethanol fuels.
  • Fluorosilicone. The material is resistant to gasoline, jet fuels, and oxygenated fuels. It is not recommended for use with ketones and some acids.
  • Perfluoroelastomer. Also called FFKM or Kalrez®, this material can be used reliably with hydrocarbons, acids, bases, and high-temperature steam in aircraft and vehicles, as well as for chemical processing.
  • Polytetrafluoroethylene. Also known as PTFE, this material is particularly well-suited to ethanol fuels and is compatible with very high and low temperatures.
